NV 4500
|
This is the ultimate transmission for any serious
Jeep. A heavy duty tranny found in full size GM and
Dodge trucks from the nineties, it can be found with
a 5.61, or in rare cases, 6.31 first gear ratio. In
addition, the 0.73 overdrive fifth keeps the RPM's down
on the highway.

T-18 / T-18a
|
This heavy-duty cast-iron Jeep 4-speed was used in CJ's
from 1972 to 1979. The T-18a, available from 1977 to
1979, features ultra low first and reverse gears. First
gears in both the T-18 and T-18a are unsynchronized,
and they are typically found hooked up to the Dana 20
transfer case. Arguably the best factory transmission
found in any short-wheelbase Jeep.

T-176
|
The T-176, used in CJ's from 1980 to 1986, is a medium-duty
aluminum-cased tranny built by Ford. These were used
with the top-notch Dana 300 transfer case, and they
will stand up to a V8 conversion under moderate use.
The T-176 has a 1-1/8" 10-spline input shaft and a 23-spline
output shaft.

T-4 / T-5 / SR-4
|
These light-duty aluminum-cased transmissions were used
in CJ's from 1980 to 1986. Like the T-176, they feature
1-1/8" input shafts and 23 spline output shafts and
are usually paired with the Dana 300. The T-5 is essentially
the same tranny as the T-4, with the addition of an
overdrive 5th gear and a slightly larger case.

T-150
|
The T-150 is a relatively strong cast-iron three-speed.
It was used in CJ's from 1976 to 1979. With its tall
first gear, this is not a great choice for wheeling
-- especially since it is typically paired with the
Dana 20. However, having reverse where you would normally
find first gear is convenient for rocking your Jeep
out when it's stuck. Uses a 1-1/8" input shaft and a
1-3/8" 6-spline output shaft.
